Amanda Bynes: Bipolar or Not?

Home > Amanda Bynes: Bipolar or Not?

Without a doubt, Amanda Bynes has easily kept her name in the headlines, but some would say for all the wrong reasons.

Starting back in October when she received her second DUI, Bynes has continued to attract attention, as she was placed on an involuntary psychiatric hold and her parents were granted financial conservatorship of her fortune. To many people, Bynes served as just another out-of-control celebrity whose credibility was quickly making its way down the tubes.

However, for others, it has been obvious that Bynes is experiencing very real and significant issues that have altered her behavior from a fun-loving Nickelodeon star to a fire-starting, Twitter-ranting socialite. For those people, it all seemed to make sense upon reading Bynes’ Twitter post earlier this week.

“I was diagnosed bipolar and manic depressive so I’m on medication and I’m seeing my psychologist and psychiatrist weekly so I’m fine :D”

It went without saying that many people were not shocked by her admission of a mental health condition such as bipolar disorder. Those who have bipolar disorder often experience a number of symptoms that can include:

  • Mood swings
  • Problematic relationships
  • Periods of depression
  • Periods of euphoria
  • Impulsiveness
  • Suicidal tendencies
  • Self-esteem issues

So, of course hearing Amanda Bynes say that she has bipolar disorder makes sense – almost every time she has been in the news, it is because of a problem with another individual, impulsive behavior, issues regarding her self-esteem, and extreme mood swings. However, the general public was quickly confused once again, as two days after posting her recent diagnosis, she retracted her Tweet, stating that:

“I was at a friends apartment last night and one of my friends tweeted my phone, sorry guys!”

Now, the public is left wondering, is Amanda Bynes bipolar or not? Are her two Tweets nothing more than solidification that she is in fact bipolar, or that her life is truly this out of control that she is unable to properly manage her Twitter account?

The speculation can go on for weeks, however one thing is for sure – Amanda Bynes is someone who is clearly struggling with some form of mental illness, whether it be bipolar disorder or not. The most important lesson to take from her frequent bouts in the news is that getting help is critical to being happy and healthy.
