Insurance is oftentimes confusing, difficult to understand, and changing year after year. However, that does not mean you should not seek to understand insurance. If you have navigated to this page, odds are you either know someone who is struggling or are yourself struggling with an alcohol or drug addiction. The fact that you are here is an incredible first step. However, the last thing you need is more stress. That is why we at Northbound Treatment want to help you better understand your policy for rehab insurance. We also have an insurance provider that can help you with figuring out what substance abuse treatment looks like with your specific policy.

Anthem Insurance for Drug and Alcohol Treatment

Anthem is a part of Blue Cross Blue Shield, and it provides insurance coverage to tons of people. It remains one of the largest profit-oriented insurance agencies in the country, servicing over 70 million people worldwide, 38 million people in the United States, and covering all 50 states. If you have Anthem, then you should expect a good amount of coverage. However, paying attention to the specifics and subtleties of your policy will save you stress, time, and money in the long run. We are here to help you better understand your policy. Let’s continue onto the specifics now.

Helping You Navigate Your Anthem Policy

Since Anthem is part of Blue Cross Blue Shield, it will function in a similar way. This means your insurance plan varies based on your location, the bronze through platinum level, and so on and so forth. For this reason, it is important to stay up to date using our insurance team.

Addiction Prevention Tools With Your Anthem Policy

Since Blue Cross Blue Shield is affiliated with Anthem, you should have access to One Health. This will help individuals combat opioid abuse in a closer examination of prescription drug abuse.

Anthem Policy Coverage for Substance Abuse with Your Policy

Below is a breakdown of the different levels of coverage.

  • Bronze coverage: With a bronze plan, approximately 60 percent of medical expenses are covered. These plans offer the lowest monthly payments but high deductibles.
  • Silver coverage: With a silver plan, about 70 percent of medical expenses are covered. These plans feature monthly payments on the lower side, with lower deductibles.
  • Gold coverage: With a gold plan, approximately 80 percent of medical expenses are covered. These plans feature higher monthly payments with low deductibles.
  • Platinum coverage: With a platinum plan, around 90 percent of medical expenses are covered. These plans offer the highest monthly payments and the lowest deductibles.

If you are in California, Colorado, Connecticut, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Maine, Missouri, New Hampshire, Nevada, New York, Ohio, Virginia, or Wisconsin, you will be covered by the Anthem family of health insurance plans licensed by Blue Cross and Blue Shield. If you are curious, the easiest way to know your insurance plan is to log in to your account and navigate to your specific state.

How Anthem Policies Work for Treatment Centers

The following are covered by Anthem, at least in part.

  • Acute inpatient hospitalization
  • Intensive outpatient treatment
  • Outpatient treatment
  • Partial hospitalization
  • Residential/detoxification

Again, it all depends on your specific plan and location, however, it does some things on an individual basis. It must determine your need, the most cost-effective care, and so on and so forth. Even the length of your stay is determined on an individual basis.

Does it Need to be In-Network?

The short answer, no. However, if you choose to opt-out of network you may see a rise in what you are paying out of pocket. Depending on your plan you could pay a large amount of copay, or almost entirely out of pocket.

About Anthem Coverage for Detoxification

Depending on the plan, Anthem does cover certain inpatient services which include medical detox. If you are unfamiliar, medical detox is often the first official step in the recovery journey. It is the step that requires you to flush all the toxins out of your body, this can sometimes be painful and even dangerous. That is why it is so important to know your plan, and know what is covered. In certain cases, the medication that can ease the withdrawal effects during detox can even be provided (depending on the plan).

Anthem Covers Inpatient Insurance

Again, while Anthem most likely covers some portion of inpatient, the specifics are dependent upon your plan, location, and individual needs. It is recommended you utilize Anthem’s directory search, our Northbound Treatment insurance team, or simply do some research regarding your plan. Most of the things you ask about inpatient treatment services are determined on an individual basis.

Anthem Coverage for Mental Health Treatment

Mental health is also a topic that needs to be discussed involving insurance coverage. Mental illness on its own is debilitating enough. However, when an addiction co-occurs with a mental health condition it becomes a co-occurring disorder. We want you to get your whole self, mind, and body, treated. The therapy can be challenging, but it is best to know which options are available, and what is able to be treated with Anthem insurance policy. Some of the following are examples of mental illness that may require therapy.

  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder
  • Bipolar Disorder
  • Eating Disorders

Recently laws have been passed that do not allow discrimination based on mental health condition, thus if your policy covers something for an alcohol or drug addiction; it likely covers the same in regard to mental illness.
