Laguna Hills, California Drug Abuse Statistics – You’re Not Alone in This Struggle

Laguna Hills, a city in Orange County, California, has certainly been impacted by substance abuse. Throughout the county, many individuals have suffered from drug and alcohol abuse and have been admitted to the hospital for these issues. Sadly, many have lost their lives due to alcohol or drug addiction, overdose, and poisoning.

In Orange County, according to a 2017 report from the Orange County Health Care Agency & Sheriff-Coroner, there were 16,396 hospitalizations between the years 2013 and 2015. During that period of time, alcohol dependence caused over 1,800 hospitalizations; drug dependence resulted in 1,448 hospital admissions. In Laguna Hills, there were 195 drug- and alcohol-related hospitalizations.

There were more male patients than women patients. Of the hospital admittees between 2013 and 2015, 58.1% were males and 42% were females. That equates to 9,532 male patients and 6,863 female patients.

The data shows that substance use and abuse have affected people of all ages and races. Of the hospitalizations that were related to drug or alcohol use,

  • 72% involved individuals between the ages of 25 and 64.
  • 78% involved Non-Hispanic White individuals
  • 14% involved Hispanic individuals
  • 3%  involved individuals from Asia/Pacific Islands
  • 2% involved African Americans

According to the same study by the Orange County Health Care Agency, the number of fatal overdoses in Orange County increased by 82% since the year 2000. Overdoses caused over 5,500 hospitalizations and about 700 deaths every year.

Many of the fatal overdoses in the area were accidental; 78.6% of the deaths caused by alcohol or drug overdose were unintentional. Some of these deaths (66.8%) involved opioids while many others (51.8%) involved prescription drugs.

The overdose deaths in Orange county involved:

  • 193 deaths related to narcotics & psychodysleptics
  • 200 deaths related to sedatives & psychotropics
  • 727 deaths related to other drugs & medicaments
  • 927 deaths related to alcohol

Though the number of hospitalizations and deaths related to alcohol and drug use is nothing less than alarming, it’s important to keep in mind that these numbers don’t involve the people who are suffering from addiction every day and have not received medical attention and treatment for their struggles.

Here in Orange County, many people are dealing with the effects of drug abuse and alcoholism. But, thankfully, there are many resources and services in the area, providing help and hope to those who are suffering from substance use.

Mental Health Services in Laguna Hills

According to the Orange County Health Care Agency & Sheriff-Coroner’s 2017 report, 48% of the 16,396 hospital admissions between 2013 and 2015 involved people who showed symptoms that were associated with mental disorders as a result of alcohol or drug withdrawal. Symptoms such as delirium tremens and substance-induced psychoses can occur when people who are dependent on alcohol or drugs stop using these substances.

Between the years 2013 and 2015, over 5,300 hospitalizations occurred because of an alcohol-induced mental disorder and 2,517 hospital admissions occurred because of a drug-induced mental disorder.

The California Health Care Almanac’s March 2018 report states that, in 2014, 1 out of 24 Californian adults experienced serious mental health disorders or illnesses. These mental illnesses are considered serious because they prevented individuals from comfortably and successfully carrying out everyday activities. According to the same study, 1 out of 6 adults in California suffered from an emotional, mental, or behavioral disorder.

  • 15.4% of the adult Californian population had a behavioral, emotional, or mental disorder (any mental illness – AMI)
  • 4.2% had a serious mental illness (SMI)
  • 7.6% of the children in California experienced a serious emotional disturbance (SED)

Of the individuals who were living with a mental health disorder, 37.2% received treatment. But, 62.8% did not get help for their mental illness.

There are many reasons why a person who has a mental illness may not get help for his or her struggle. Some individuals may not feel comfortable reaching out for help due to the stigma that sometimes surrounds the topic of mental illness. Others may not get help because they simply do not know that they need treatment. It’s common for individuals to have a “that’s just the way I am” mentality, preventing them from seeing the importance of getting professional help in dealing with the symptoms of mental illness in their lives.

Other individuals may not get treatment for mental disorders because they are not if there are any treatment services or resources near them. Unfortunately, some areas do not have many mental health resources available. But, thankfully, that’s not the case here in Orange County!

Treatment centers like ours here at Northbound Treatment Services provide clients with mental health services as well as addiction treatment programs.

Inpatient Vs. Outpatient Drug and Alcohol Treatment in Laguna Hills

Outpatient treatment is a type of addiction rehab program that offers people the opportunity to work through the recovery process safely and effectively while still being able to live at home or at a sober living facility. Depending on the type of program and the requirements of the facility, individuals who go through an outpatient program may be able to work or go to school while still getting treatment for substance abuse.

Inpatient (residential) treatment, like outpatient rehab, provides the opportunity to gain freedom from substance abuse in a safe environment. But, this type of program requires patients to live at the treatment facility.

By living at their treatment center, individuals in recovery can have around-the-clock access to professional and clinical assistance. This is especially helpful throughout the beginning stages of recovery as individuals are just starting their journey to freedom from addiction.

Often, residential treatment is considered to be the best option for those who have severe addictions while outpatient programs are thought to work well for individuals who have less extreme cases of substance abuse. But, addiction at any “level” is serious and should be treated with the patient’s needs in mind.
