LGBTQIA+ Drug Rehab Center

Historically, members of the LGBTQ community have faced severe homophobia and discrimination when it comes to getting help for medical and mental health concerns. While there have been strides in the right direction, there is always room for improvement.

According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), individuals in the LGBTQ community have higher rates of substance use compared to other demographics. As an example, the rates of opioid use (prescription medications and heroin) within the LGBTQ community were at 9%, whereas heterosexual individual rates were at 3.8% for the past year. We also saw that there was an increase within the LGBTQ community regarding opioid use from 2017 to 2019.

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) conducted a study in 2019 that found that approximately 86% of LGBTQ individuals struggling with addiction had no desire to seek treatment. This staggering number clearly illustrates the need to continue improving access to care and quality of care for members of the LGBTQ community. NIH estimates that approximately 7.4% of addiction treatment providers offer specialized treatment options for LGBTQ patients.

One of the improvements that we have seen in recent times is the development of LGBTQ addiction treatment programs. These programs are designed specifically for members of the LGBTQ community and offer a safe space to talk about concerns that are specific to their community.

LGBTQ alcohol rehabs can be an inclusive treatment facility that offers specialized treatment groups for members of the LGBTQ community. This means that you would be engaging in your addiction treatment program with heterosexual individuals. Specialized treatment can occur as group therapy, educational group sessions, and individual sessions to address concerns specific to the LGBTQ community.

Northbound Treatment is an LGBTQ rehab center located in southern California. We have four different inclusive treatment facilities that can provide you with a variety of treatment programs including detoxification, inpatient residential rehab, partial hospitalization programming, intensive outpatient programming, and family therapy programming. What are the Benefits of Addiction Treatment for the LGBTQ Community?

When someone finds themselves ready to reach out for help regarding addiction to drugs or alcohol, they often find themselves looking into more than one treatment provider. When a member of the LGBTQ community is searching for a treatment provider, in addition to a quality treatment program, they are looking for a safe environment.

It has been said that what you put into your recovery, you will get out of it. This simply means that if you work your hardest while in treatment, you will find yourself on a better path to recovery. A large part of addiction treatment is opening up and being vulnerable. To do this, we need to feel safe, supported, welcomed, seen, and heard. Unfortunately, this has not always been the experience for members of the LGBTQ community in treatment programs.

Research by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIH) has shown us that these specialized treatment programs for the LGBTQ community are effective and increase an individual’s chances of healthy sobriety.

While most addiction treatment programs are designed to be inclusive, there may unintentionally be negative messages to the LGBTQ community. The bottom line is that members of the LGBTQ community deserve the same level of compassion, support, and kindness as any other individual seeking help. LGBTQ-specialized treatment programs can guarantee specialized care that you may not be exposed to in a traditional addiction treatment program.

Northbound Treatment can provide you with the LGBTQ substance abuse treatment that you have been looking for. All our treatment facilities are inclusive and designed with your comfort in mind. We offer a unique LGBTQ programming option that can give you a safe space to talk about concerns that may not arise in other treatment groups. We encourage you to call (866) 568-2722 today to speak with a representative to learn more about our Southern California rehab programs.

Northbound’s LGBTQ Residential Treatment in Southern California

If you find yourself in need of a Southern California LGBTQ rehab, there are a few ways that you can go about finding referrals. The first would be speaking to one of your care providers about your concerns with drugs or alcohol. This could be a medical health professional or mental health professional. They will likely ask you questions about your concerns so that they can have a better understanding of your addiction. From there, they should be able to provide you with a treatment referral based on your needs. Additionally, they can answer questions you may have regarding the different levels of care available.

Another route you can take would be to contact your insurance provider and ask them about in-network providers. They will not be able to tell you what level of care you would need, but they can be a valuable resource and provide you with your options. An additional benefit is that they can provide you with a clear understanding of your policy and coverage, which can help you understand your financial responsibility.

There are a variety of levels of care available to members of the LGBTQ community. A common need for individuals who get treatment for their substance abuse is detox. Detoxification programs are medically supervised treatment programs that typically last one week. This time allows your body to adjust to the changes that occur when you stop using. Withdrawal is known to be an uncomfortable and possibly fatal time, depending on what you are using. Because of this, it is best to detox with medical supervision and support.

Inpatient residential rehab programs provide you with thorough and comprehensive treatment regarding addiction and recovery. These programs can vary in length from 4 weeks to 12 weeks, depending on your treatment needs. Inpatient programs give you a structured day, including therapy, individual time, and time for specialized treatment. You will spend time learning about relapse prevention skills that you can use once you complete the program to make your transition easier.

Partial hospitalization programs are ideal for individuals who need a continued source of support while living at home. This program option will provide you with a structured day similar to an inpatient treatment program most days of the week.

California intensive outpatient programs will still provide you with support; however, the treatment groups tend to be shorter, so they can be scheduled around other responsibilities such as work or school. These programs tend to have an individual therapy component and can continue providing support for mental health concerns you may have.
