When I used to go out to an event, I would only show up to some of the biggest and best parties, and I would get hammered before I even got there. By the time I left, I would have already blacked out and not remembered anything about that night.
Today, when I go to an event, it’s as opposite as the other side of the coin. Now it’s all about how I can raise the bar rather than drink at it. A few weeks ago, I was super excited to be able to attend The Prism Awards with two other co-workers at Northbound.
The Prism Awards are an incredibly unique award ceremony unlike any other. It’s an event that is focused solely on recognizing those in the entertainment industry who are working to raise awareness about addiction and recovery, and even those who have successfully done so. It’s a huge event that I was so thrilled to be able to attend, especially because I love being surrounded by people who share my same goals and dreams.
I often look back and what my life was like four years ago, and I get an eerie feeling throughout. It’s like my life at that time is a stranger to me because I can hardly remember what was happening around me. To me, it was a blessing to be able to attend The Prism Awards and I am so grateful for it.
I really starting thinking about how monumental this event was going to be for me as I was sitting in church this past Easter Sunday. I am always reflecting on my life and I constantly feel lucky to be where I am today. But this Easter Sunday was different, because I truly felt like I was having a spiritual experience while sitting through service. The vibe was on point for me, and it really just became a moment where I was being reminded of where my life is today, and that I am happy to be alive to live it.
I get tripped out from time to time when I think about my journey, and like I always say, there’s no straight line to how I got here. But the one thing I am truly grateful for is that I am now being able to recognize and work alongside individuals who are looking through the same lenses I am when it comes to the importance of recovery. I was so excited to attend The Prism Awards, and I am even more grateful to have been a part of such a wonderful night!
