Substance Abuse Treatment Orange County

Every day, more people are using substances to relax, unwind, drown their sorrows, or otherwise deal with unresolved emotional turmoil to their detriment. Some abused substances can be hazardous and illegal, yet many indulge them forgetting that substance misuse is a toxic journey that leads to many other problems. This misuse has taken a toll on our society, as seen in our hospitals and emergency rooms, regarding direct health harm caused by substance addiction and its relationship to physical trauma.

Here are the different types of substances that, when abused, require rehab treatment to quit and stay sober long-term:

Stimulants

This category of drugs includes likes of amphetamines, methamphetamines(meth), and cocaine. They can be smoked, ingested, or injected. These substances are widely abused by those who want to increase their energy, attentiveness, or productivity. Long-term use effects include hyperthermia, hostility, mood swings, seizures, psychosis, and heart failure. To recover safely, clients frequently need to start therapy with a medically-assisted detox.

Alcohol

Regardless of how socially acceptable its usage is, alcohol is still a drug. Alcohol has a significant potential for misuse and can lead to various physical and mental health issues, some of which are fatal. In addition to its direct health consequences, alcohol misuse is linked to over half of all fatal motor vehicle accidents, according to officials. Withdrawal from using alcohol can cause anxiety, irregular heartbeat, tremor, seizures, hallucinations, and in more severe cases, liver failure or Delirium tremens (DT).

Opioids

Heroin, oxycodone, and fentanyl are the most common types of opioids abused in today’s society. Most users experience a general sensation of well-being, which can sometimes progress to a joyful mood. This high can be addicting, making it difficult to walk away from these medications.

Hallucinogens

These substances cause hallucinations, and many people experience feelings that are not real. This drug class encompasses anything from certain types of mushrooms to LSD, often referred to as “club drugs.” Many believe these drugs are harmless or healthy since they may not have the same experience as someone using another illicit drug. This type of drug may not foster traditional addiction, but customized substance abuse treatment and highly skilled professionals can mitigate drug dependence.

Marijuana

Cannabis is becoming as popular as alcohol and cigarettes in several legal medical and recreational markets across the country. According to research, more than 25% of those who take marijuana have a use disorder. When a person becomes accustomed to taking massive dosages, the brain adapts to its continuing dependency for optimal operation. Cannabis addiction can cause motivation loss and alterations in perception and cognition.

Prescription Medications

Drug misuse is not only restricted to recreational usage. Abuse is defined as utilizing a personal prescription in a way that is not prescribed, so technically, abusing prescription drugs also qualifies as abuse. These may include Benzodiazepines(benzos) like Xanax and Valium, which are highly addictive when taken in large amounts.
