Admitting you have an addiction to drugs or alcohol or getting your loved one to admit that they have a problem can be one of the hardest conversations to have.

But there is no need to despair. There are innumerable resources out there to help you or your loved one on the path to recovery. And with ever more liberal attitudes to drugs and the legalization of cannabis in some states, the stigma around addiction is on the decline.

Here’s what you need to get help and where you can find the right treatment resources in Missouri.

Drug, Alcohol and Treatment Resources in Missouri

There are seven treatment centers in Missouri. There is one in St Louis and another in St Louis County. The others are in Kansas City, Springfield, Independence, Chesterfield, and O’Fallon. All are run by Missouri’s Division of Behavioral Health.

It’s clear then that most areas of the state are covered and that there will be somewhere to get help without extensive travel.

Types of Treatment  in Missouri

The main type of treatment offered in Missouri is The Comprehensive Substance Treatment and Rehabilitation (CSTAR) program. This is an extensive program but it isn’t one-size-fits-all.

There are four programs depending on you or your loved one’s circumstances. The program for women and children prioritizes women who are pregnant. This program is vital for ensuring innocent children are not affected by the horrific consequences of drugs.

It isn’t just the drugs that affect children in these situations but often, where much harder drugs are involved, the dangerous situations that come with it. Poverty can also be a factor here, with drug dealers happy to take money from desperate mothers.

The adolescent program focuses on young adults from the ages of 12 up to the age of 17. Our teenage years are of course a time for experimenting, but many young people do not fully appreciate the damaging consequences of taking hard drugs and how they can impact the rest of their lives.

We help to get young adults affected drugs back on the right track and attending school on a regular basis.

The opioid program is designed specifically for people suffering from addictions to opioid-based drugs such as heroin or morphine. Our specialists can help you and use medical drug-based withdrawal programs to ensure you can beat your addiction safely.

There is also a fourth program aimed at the general population that can help you or your loved ones with any addiction.

You’re Not Alone in This Struggle

The most important thing to remember whilst recovering from any addiction is not to feel as if you have failed and that you are alone. Many people suffer from addictions to both alcohol and illegal drugs and have different circumstances.

Society is continuing to open up about drugs and it is becoming less of a stigma. But reminding yourself of the statistics can provoke some comfort and show you that, with the right program, people can and do recover.

In 2009, 48, 628 people admitted themselves to drug rehabilitation centers in Missouri. Missouri has a population of around 6 million people.

Drug Abuse in Missouri

Missouri has a higher than national average overdose rate for opioids. There were 952 deaths in 2007. This 16.5 deaths in every 100,000 people versus the national average of 14.6 people in every 100,000.

It is also believed that about 50% of people who suffer from an addiction to drugs also have severe mental health problems.

This all suggests that drug abuse should be treated as a condition of the mind. People who have an addiction to drugs should also be treated with compassion rather than with the fear of being prosecuted or sent to prison which could exacerbate their mental health issues.

The Recovery Community in Missouri

The community for those recovering from addictions in Missouri is particularly strong. There are specific groups depending on the type of addiction you have or your specific circumstances, such as if you or your loved ones are pregnant or are below the age of 18.

Inpatient vs Outpatient

But there are also other ways in which those in recovery can be accommodated. There are both inpatient and outpatient centers. This gives you or your loved one the option to stay at home in comfort and attend centers during the day.

If, however, there is a problem that means it is going to be difficult for you to stay at home, such as temptation or the influence of unhelpful friends, then a residential program following an intervention might be the best way forward.

To ensure you choose the right facility you have to ensure that you have found a facility with staff who are friendly and you connect with but you also want to find a clinic that is going to support you beyond your time there. If it is your loved one who has been admitted to rehab then you yourself will need some advice about how to best support them when they finish their program.

You also want to ensure that the facilities are clean and that the facility meets state and federal guidelines.
