Partial Hospitalization Programs (PHP) are a very effective level of care for addictions and mental health treatment, and less expensive than residential treatment. Read on to learn more about what they are, typical schedules, and their benefits.

What Is a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)?

As an intermediate step in care between residential (inpatient or rehab) and Intensive Outpatient (IOP) care, PHP offers an intensive, structured form of outpatient treatment. Unlike residential treatment, PHP allows you to live at home.

Key Features of a PHP

  1. Intensive Treatment Without Overnight Stay
    • Patients attend treatment for several hours a day (typically 5-6 hours), 5-7 days a week, but return home or to a sober living facility at night.
  1. Therapy
    • Individual, Group, and Family therapy
    • Psychiatric care with medication management
    • Psychotherapy (e.g. EMDR, CBT, DBT, trauma therapy)
    • Relapse prevention and coping skills training
  1. Structured Support
    • Transition from higher levels of care
    • Oversight from medical professionals
    • More independence than residential
  1. For Moderate to Severe Cases
    • Those requiring more support than outpatient or IOP but not needing 24/7 care.
    • Stepping down from inpatient treatment.
    • At risk of relapse or crisis but are medically stable.

This table summarizes the differences.

How Long Does PHP Last?

In general, PHPs operate 5 to 6 hours per day, 5 days per week. Some provide half-day or weekend sessions.

PHPs are somewhat flexible. Depending on progress and individual needs, a PHP typically runs for 2 to 6 weeks.
