Family Therapy Rehab Orange County: How Northbound Involves Loved Ones
Northbound's Family Program brings parents and partners into treatment for four structured days each month, without extra fees. Here’s what families actually experience.
Opioid deaths in Orange County rose 45% from 2019 to 2020.
Opioid-involved deaths in Orange County jumped 45% between 2019 and 2020. That spike hasn’t slowed. For families facing a substance use crisis, every hour counts. Northbound Treatment runs its flagship campus, The Grove, at 9842 13th St in Garden Grove. This is a fully licensed, 24/7 detox and residential facility with same-day admission available.
This page is for families. You’ll find details about The Grove’s setting, the treatment process, how the family program works, and what to know about insurance before your loved one arrives.
The Grove isn’t a hospital. It’s a residential campus with a college-like feel, where detox and inpatient care happen under one roof. The staff includes MDs, licensed therapists, and addiction counselors. About a third of the team are alumni of the program.
Clients live in gender-specific wings. Clinical programming—group sessions, psychoeducation, trauma therapy, and community activities—brings everyone together. There’s an on-site gym, a walking labyrinth, a turf court for yoga and volleyball, and a fire pit where the community gathers most evenings. Meals are prepared by an on-site chef team three times daily. These aren’t just amenities. Routine, comfort, and community are built into the treatment model.
The campus is about a mile from Disneyland Resort and 20 minutes from the coast. For families flying in, John Wayne Airport (SNA) is closest. Over half of Northbound’s clients come from out of state, so logistics are straightforward.
Medical detox at The Grove usually lasts five to ten days. If co-occurring conditions show up during intake, that window can extend. The program is certified for Incidental Medical Services (IMS), which means 24-hour physician access and off-site lab coordination when needed. Dr. Venice Sanchez, MD, leads the team as Medical Director. She is double board-certified in Psychiatry/Neurology and Addiction Medicine.
Medication-Assisted Treatment is available when clinically appropriate. The team manages detox for alcohol, opioids (including fentanyl and Suboxone), benzodiazepines, methamphetamine, cocaine, and mixed substance use. Each person receives a medical plan tailored to their substance history.
Alcohol and benzodiazepine withdrawal can trigger seizures and cardiac events. Detoxing from these substances at home is dangerous. Medically supervised detox is the safer route.
Detox is a bridge, not a finish line. Individual and group therapy start on day one. Screening for anxiety, depression, and PTSD happens during this phase. By the time someone is medically stable, a transition plan is already in place. Most clients move directly to residential treatment on the same campus.
Residential treatment at The Grove lasts 30 to 90 days. Northbound’s 2015 outcomes study with USC found over 97% abstinence from illicit drugs among clients who completed the program. Longer stays lead to stronger outcomes.
Each client works with up to six clinicians: an ASAM-certified addiction psychiatrist, a licensed primary therapist, a trauma therapist, an addictions counselor, and case management. This team stays consistent—no retelling the same story week after week.
Programming is dense. Mornings start with check-ins, followed by individual and group therapy, psychoeducation, DBT skills, EMDR for trauma, music and art therapy, yoga, and evening community meetings. Idle time is a known risk factor for returning to use, so the schedule is structured for engagement.
The Grove offers three specialty tracks during residential care: Collegebound® for young adults whose education was interrupted, Careerbound® for those with work disruptions, and the LINKS faith-based track for clients whose spirituality is central to recovery. These tracks are integrated from the start—not just optional add-ons.
The InVivo® model runs through the program. InVivo means "in life." Instead of isolating clients, the program gradually reintroduces real-world responsibilities. Phones, social interaction, outings, and life-skills activities are all part of the process. The goal is to practice sober living before discharge.
Northbound’s Grove campus hosts its family program on-site four days each month at 9842 13th St, Garden Grove. There is no charge for family members to attend. Addiction affects the whole family system, so recovery includes everyone.
Day one covers the disease model of addiction and healthy communication. Day two focuses on codependency, family roles, and boundaries, including Family Sculpt, a process that brings each person’s perspective into focus. Day three includes Knee to Knee, a guided session between the client and family members. Staff describe this as one of the most powerful parts of the program.
Families join group sessions with clients, family-only groups with therapists, and Al-Anon step work. After discharge, a weekly Family Support meeting runs every Wednesday night on Zoom. Families can attend the monthly program more than once.
David Gates, Director of Family Services, coordinates family involvement. During detox, visitation is case by case due to medical needs. Structured family therapy starts once the client is stable.
You don’t have to wait for discharge to begin your own recovery process. The family program starts while your loved one is still in treatment.
Northbound Treatment is in-network with over 15 major insurance plans. The admissions team verifies benefits in about one business hour. Most clients pay little or nothing out of pocket for medically necessary detox and residential care.
Accepted plans include Aetna, Anthem, BlueCross BlueShield, Cigna, Compsych, First Health Network, GEHA, Health Net, ILWU, Magellan, MHN Insurance, NYSHIP, Premera Blue Cross, TriCare, USAMCO, and Beacon Health. Medicare and Medicaid aren’t accepted. If your plan isn’t listed, the team can check out-of-network options and discuss financial assistance.
Washington state residents are covered for treatment at The Grove under most PPO plans. The Seattle office at 2120 1st Ave N handles assessments and insurance checks before clients travel to California.

Discharge planning starts weeks before a client leaves The Grove. Therapy referrals, step-down program options, 12-step meeting schedules, job and school resources, and alumni connections are all lined up before discharge. There’s no extra fee for this planning.
Clients often step down to Northbound’s Partial Hospitalization Program in Newport Beach, then to Intensive Outpatient or the HomeBound virtual program. The same clinical team manages these transitions, so clients don’t have to start over with new providers.
The Grove hosts weekly alumni meetings on Monday evenings and Friday mornings. Over 500 active alumni are connected through the Orange County chapter. For families, this community offers real support after treatment ends.
Graduates can apply for the Work Exchange Program, which lets them work at Northbound while studying for a Licensed Addiction Counseling credential. For some, recovery becomes a career.
Same-day admissions are available. The admissions line at (866) 311-0003 is staffed 24/7. After you call, a real admissions representative conducts a free, confidential pre-admission assessment and starts insurance verification. Most families know their coverage details within one business hour.
Visitation during detox is decided case by case because of medical needs. Once a client moves into residential care, structured family therapy and the monthly family program begin. The family program runs four days each month at no cost.
The Grove treats alcohol, opioids (heroin, fentanyl, oxycodone, Suboxone), benzodiazepines, methamphetamine, cocaine, prescription drugs, and polysubstance use. Northbound specializes in complex and severe substance use disorders.
Dual diagnosis treatment is the foundation at Northbound. People with substance use disorders are about twice as likely to have a co-occurring mood or anxiety disorder, according to SAMHSA research. Every client receives a psychiatric evaluation at admission and ongoing psychiatric care.
Residential treatment at The Grove usually runs 30 to 90 days, based on ASAM criteria and clinical progress. Many clients complete 60 or 90 days. The National Institute on Drug Abuse notes that treatment under 90 days is less effective for most people with severe substance use disorders. Northbound does not push for the shortest stay.
Yes. Northbound Treatment holds Joint Commission (JCAHO) accreditation, the highest standard in behavioral healthcare. The facility is licensed by the California Department of Health Care Services (DHCS License #300661CP) and is LegitScript certified. The detox program is IMS certified.
