Northern California & the Bay Area
Most Bay Area and Sacramento clients fly into John Wayne Airport (SNA), minutes from campus, with LAX and Long Beach as alternates. Admissions can coordinate arrival timing around your first treatment day.
Overview
A Partial Hospitalization Program — PHP for short — is the most structured level of care that does not involve living at a treatment facility. It delivers more weekly clinical hours than an intensive outpatient program while allowing clients to sleep at home or in an approved living environment.
For California residents, Northbound’s PHP means one dedicated day-treatment campus in Newport Beach. Adults travel in from the Bay Area, the Central Valley, the Inland Empire, Los Angeles, San Diego, and beyond, then return to their own housing each evening. More than half of Northbound’s clients historically come from outside the immediate area, so admissions plans travel and housing before the first treatment day.
PHP can be a step down after medical detox or residential treatment at our Garden Grove campus, a step up when weekly therapy is not enough, or a direct entry point after a clinical assessment. Placement is always based on an individual evaluation — never a fixed package.

Every in-person PHP service happens at 3822 Campus Drive, Suite 200, Newport Beach, CA 92660 — Northbound’s Newport Beach treatment location. Northbound does not operate a second PHP in Garden Grove, San Diego, or anywhere else in the state, so there is never confusion about where day treatment takes place.
Concentrating PHP at one campus protects what matters clinically: psychiatric access, a 2:1 staff-to-client ratio, and specialty tracks that would be diluted across satellite sites. Detox and residential care remain nine miles north at our Garden Grove campus, which keeps the entire higher-level continuum inside one organization.
Clients flying in typically arrive at John Wayne Airport (SNA), minutes from campus, with Long Beach (LGB) and LAX as alternates. Drivers reach us via the 5, 405, 55, and 73 corridors. Exact arrival times, parking, and transportation details are confirmed during admissions.

Level of Care Assessment
PHP is built for adults who are medically stable yet still need near-daily clinical structure to stay on track. It is often the right fit when weekly therapy or IOP has not provided enough support — or when residential treatment is ending and real life needs to be practiced with a clinical safety net.
PHP is not the safest starting point for everyone. Severe withdrawal, an active medical emergency, an acute psychiatric crisis, or the inability to remain safe outside program hours usually means detox or residential treatment comes first. A confidential assessment is how we determine the right starting level.
PHP may fit when someone:
If someone is in immediate danger or experiencing a medical or psychiatric emergency, call 911 or 988. For a confidential level-of-care screening from anywhere in California, call (866) 311-0003 any time.
Conditions Treated
Northbound’s PHP treats adults recovering from alcohol and drug use disorders, with integrated support when mental health symptoms travel alongside substance use. Because withdrawal risk, medications, trauma history, and recovery goals differ from person to person, every care plan is individualized.
Depending on the clinical picture, treatment may include individual and group therapy, psychiatric evaluation, medication management when appropriate, CBT- and DBT-informed skills, trauma-informed care including EMDR when indicated, relapse-prevention planning, family support, and case management. Co-occurring disorder treatment keeps substance use and mental health needs inside one coordinated plan. Not every client receives every service.
If someone is experiencing a medical emergency, severe withdrawal, suicidal thoughts, or an immediate safety concern, call 911 or 988. This page is educational and does not replace an individual medical assessment; admissions screens for withdrawal risk before recommending PHP.
The Process
Admissions is confidential and available 24/7. For clients outside Orange County, we build travel and housing into the plan before the first treatment day — PHP itself is daytime care and never includes an overnight stay at the campus.
Share what is happening — substance use, mental health symptoms, medications, treatment history, and safety concerns — with an admissions counselor who answers around the clock. You can start the conversation today.
A qualified clinician reviews withdrawal risk, stability, and support needs to confirm whether PHP, detox, residential care, or IOP is the appropriate entry point.
We contact your plan, confirm network status and authorization requirements, and explain estimated costs. Verification is free and never obligates you to enroll.
For clients beyond commuting distance, we coordinate arrival logistics and confirm where you will stay outside program hours before a start date is set.
On your first day the clinical team completes intake, finalizes an individualized treatment plan, and walks you through the daily schedule and attendance expectations.
Progress reviews run throughout PHP, and continuing care — often HomeBound virtual IOP in your home county — is planned before PHP ends.
No two care plans are identical, so exact timing varies by clinical need. What stays consistent is the rhythm: arrive each morning, move through blocks of group, individual, and specialty care, then head home each evening to practice what you learned. Most treatment days include up to six hours of structured programming.
Symptoms, sleep, cravings, and safety are reviewed with the clinical team, and goals are set for the day ahead.
Clinician-led process groups plus CBT- and DBT-informed work on coping, emotional regulation, communication, and relapse prevention.
Scheduled one-to-one therapy, psychiatric or medication-management appointments, and trauma-informed options such as EMDR when clinically indicated.
The day closes with case management, family communication planning, and a concrete plan for practicing recovery skills at home overnight.
Evenings are spent at home or in an approved living environment — PHP does not include an overnight stay at the Newport Beach campus. Current start and end times are confirmed during admissions, and attendance expectations can shift with clinical progress and insurance authorization.
Each step is guided by our clinical team — you are never alone in this process.
Start TodayClinical Excellence
Every California PHP client attends the same Newport Beach campus, so clinical quality, psychiatric access, and specialty tracks stay concentrated instead of diluted across satellite sites.
Detox and residential care happen at our Garden Grove campus, nine miles away. Stepping down to PHP never means transferring records, retelling your story, or starting over with a new provider.
When PHP ends, eligible California residents continue with [virtual IOP](/telehealth-iop-services/) from home — the same organization, the same clinical standards, no matter your ZIP code.
More than half of Northbound’s clients historically travel from outside the area. Admissions helps with airport arrivals, drive routes, and living arrangements before day one.
PHP is where recovery skills meet real life. Clients apply therapeutic tools in their actual evenings and weekends, then process what happened with clinicians the next treatment day.
For clients whose faith is central to recovery, the Christ-centered LINKS track can integrate spiritual principles with evidence-based care when clinically appropriate and available.

Every level below is available to California residents within one organization. The right starting point depends on withdrawal risk, medical and psychiatric stability, home environment, and safety outside program hours — which is why Northbound completes a confidential assessment before recommending any level of care.
| Level of Care | Where the Client Stays | Primary Purpose | Common Next Step |
|---|---|---|---|
| Medical Detox | Overnight at our Garden Grove campus with 24/7 medical monitoring | Physician-led withdrawal management and stabilization before ongoing treatment begins | Typically residential treatment, then PHP once medically stable |
| Residential Treatment | Overnight at The Grove in Garden Grove (16–30 beds) | Around-the-clock structure and immersive clinical programming in a protected setting | Step down to Newport Beach PHP when overnight support is no longer required |
| Partial Hospitalization Program | Home or approved housing each evening — no overnight stay at the PHP campus | Up to six hours of structured daytime treatment on most treatment days in Newport Beach | The statewide day-treatment level — open to adults from every California county |
| Virtual IOP (HomeBound) | At home anywhere in California | Telehealth intensive outpatient care with fewer weekly hours and greater schedule flexibility | The most common step-down after PHP for clients returning to their home county |
| Outpatient & Aftercare | At home in your own community | Lower-intensity ongoing support — periodic therapy, alumni programming, and relapse prevention | Long-term maintenance following PHP or IOP; [alumni support](/programs/aftercare/) continues indefinitely |

Admissions
Whether you live ten minutes from campus or ten hours away, the process begins the same way: a confidential conversation with an admissions counselor, available 24/7. PHP is daytime treatment — admissions is the part that never sleeps.
Substance use, mental health symptoms, medications, withdrawal risk, and immediate safety needs — everything stays confidential.
We look at past treatment, your current living situation, and the recovery support available to you outside program hours.
We check network status, deductibles, and authorization requirements with your plan. You can also verify insurance online any time.
We coordinate your arrival, confirm your living arrangement, schedule the clinical assessment, and lock in a first treatment day.
Many commercial insurance plans cover PHP when treatment is medically necessary and properly authorized, but coverage always depends on the specific plan, network status, deductible, and clinical criteria. Verification of benefits is not a guarantee of payment, and Northbound does not accept Medicaid. For cost context, see our Orange County cost & insurance guide.
Cost & Coverage
There is no single sticker price for PHP. Cost depends on the number of authorized treatment days, the services in your plan, network status, deductibles, coinsurance, and prior-authorization requirements — which is why Northbound runs a free, confidential benefits check before asking anyone to commit.
Northbound is in-network with more than 15 major commercial insurance plans, and many cover PHP when it is medically necessary and authorized. Verification of benefits is not a guarantee of payment, and Medicaid is not accepted. Travel, housing, and other non-clinical expenses are separate from treatment costs — ask admissions which expenses are included before booking travel.

Statewide Access
Northbound’s only in-person PHP is in Newport Beach, and that is by design — one campus, one clinical standard, statewide reach. Adults enter from every region of California, sometimes stepping down from our Garden Grove campus, sometimes arriving directly from the community after an assessment.
Wherever you are starting from, admissions builds the logistics into your treatment plan before the first day.
Most Bay Area and Sacramento clients fly into John Wayne Airport (SNA), minutes from campus, with LAX and Long Beach as alternates. Admissions can coordinate arrival timing around your first treatment day.
Fresno, Bakersfield, Riverside, and San Bernardino clients typically drive via the 99, 5, or 15 corridors or take a short flight into SNA. We help plan the route and where you will stay during the week.
LA County clients are close enough to commute in some cases — the 5 and 405 run directly to Newport Beach. For others, staying nearer campus during the treatment week makes more sense. We will talk through both.
San Diego clients reach campus via the 5 or the 73 toll road, often in under two hours. Northbound’s San Diego office can also help with assessments and continuing-care planning closer to home.
PHP does not include overnight accommodation at the campus. Confirm exactly what is and is not provided with admissions before making travel arrangements.
Living Arrangements
Because PHP is daytime treatment, where you sleep matters. The clinical team evaluates during the admission assessment whether your planned living situation offers enough stability and recovery support for this level of care.
Northbound does not include overnight housing at the Newport Beach campus, but admissions can discuss local options and help you think through what will work before treatment begins.

Your own home
Clients within commuting distance of Newport Beach often live at home and drive in each treatment day.
Family or friends
Staying with supportive family or friends near campus can work well when the environment is substance-free and stable.
Approved recovery housing
Independent sober living can pair with PHP when clinically appropriate. Northbound does not own or operate sober living homes, but admissions can explain what to look for.
Extended-stay options
Some statewide clients use extended-stay lodging near campus during the treatment week. Confirm costs and availability with admissions before booking.
Getting Ready
Once your start date is set, admissions confirms your arrival time, the current schedule, and exactly what to bring. Having the items below prepared keeps intake day focused on your care — not paperwork.
Do not stop, start, or change any medication unless instructed by a qualified medical professional. If anything on this list is hard to gather, tell admissions — we would rather solve it before day one than on it.
