The Statistics: The Opioid Epidemic in the State of Missouri

According to the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, opioid overdose claimed the lives of 1 out of every 65 individuals in 2017. The same source reports that 951 people lost their lives because of opioid use that year. Most of the individuals who died as a result of opioid use were between the ages of 25 and 34. However, these substances claimed the lives of people of all ages, including those under 25 years old and some individuals 45 years old or older.

The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) reports that 618 people died as a result of synthetic opioids in 2017. That’s quite an increase from the 56 synthetic opioid-related deaths in 2012.

Needless to say, every state, including Missouri, is dealing with the effects of substance abuse. Many people are in need of alcohol rehab in St. Louis. Others need drug rehab services in this area. Thankfully, however, there is help for those who are experiencing this problem. Individuals in St. Loius, Missouri can find hope for recovery here at Northbound Treatment Services!

For those who call St. Louis home, nowhere else in the world will do. This is the rare city with a quiet, Norman Rockwell-type charm. Nowhere are the people as polite or kind. To natives of the city, no other place feels quite like home.

Our facility here at Northbound Treatment Center is in the idyllic suburb Kirkwood. The surrounding area is full of quaint details. These include a stone-and-thatch train station, turn-of-the-century homes, and old-school diners.

In St. Louis, Northbound has created the city’s premier community for drug and alcohol recovery. During your time in any of our St. Louis programs (Outpatient, IOP, Sober Living), you will interact with the local St. Louis neighborhood. Our St. Louis drug rehab center alumni have formed a strong community. They meet regularly to lend emotional support and take part in activities we organize, such as attending baseball games or going to restaurants downtown. We understand the importance of continuing to support the substance abuse recovery community of St. Louis. So, we provide this support by offering drug and alcohol addiction support services, family services, and group therapy.

Northbound St. Louis Family Services

The family unit is one that often feels the effects of an individual’s addiction. If a family member struggles with substance abuse, chances are his or her loved ones will also suffer. Unfortunately, people often overlook the family throughout the addiction treatment process. Of course, it’s critical to focus on the individual in recovery in order to help him or her to overcome this struggle. However, it’s also important to make sure that the family members of recovering individuals also have the tools and resources they need.

Families need the opportunity to heal, as well. They need to have a chance to develop healthy coping skills. Also, it’s important for families to receive information and education regarding addiction and the recovery process. In order for the whole family to heal, a sense of understanding will be necessary. So, it will be important for the entire family to be able to work through challenges and gain a deeper understanding of their loved one’s struggles.

Some of the services we offer for families who are experiencing the effects of an individual’s struggle with addiction include:

  • Weekly Family Support Group
  • Family Therapy
  • Communication Coaching
  • Boundaries Education & Support

Northbound St. Louis Support

Support is absolutely necessary throughout the treatment process. Individuals who are working to end addiction in their lives need to have a support system around them. They need to have people in their corner, encouraging them to move forward and stay on track. There will be many difficult days throughout the early recovery stages. It may be hard to persevere during the treatment process. This is why support during rehab is so important.

However, support is still necessary after treatment is over, too. Recovery is a life-long journey; it doesn’t end when rehab does. So, it’s important for individuals to have access to support services even after they complete their rehab program. Here at Northbound Treatment Services, we offer the following support resources:

  • Long-Term Accountability
  • Therapeutic Toxicology Services
  • Recovery Coaching
  • Sober Community

Northbound St. Louis Alumni

Keeping with the idea of providing continuous support for our clients, we offer services for those who complete our rehab program! Northbound Alumni can continue to receive care and support through our Alumni program. Those who participate in this program can benefit from the following services:

Tina Hoester

Program Manager, St. Louis

With 30 years of experience in the field of addiction, treatment, and recovery, Tina has worked in the entire continuum of care as a clinician, educator, supervisor, and manager. Tina is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), a Certified Reciprocal Alcohol and Drug Counselor (CRADC), a Certified Co-Occurring Disorders Diplomate CCDP-D and is “All But Dissertation” for her Ph.D. in Counselor Education. A longtime advocate for people in recovery and their families, Tina served for 13 years as a Council Member for the Missouri Recovery Network; a statewide recovery advocacy organization which educates people about the behavioral healthcare system, the process of policy and systems change, and advocacy. Tina was also chosen to participate in a 10-panel town hall discussion of addiction and recovery at the White House.

When joining the Northbound staff in April of 2016 Tina was most excited by Northbound’s statement “Our mission is to assist our clients in achieving one year of continuous sobriety.” Knowing how much change occurs in the first year with many obstacles to overcome, it is her goal to help clients remain sober long enough to experience some of the rewards of sobriety and to teach the full range of life coping skills necessary for a successful recovery. Client families are a critical part of this process and Tina shares in the joy of families healing together.
