Family Therapy Rehab Orange County: How Northbound Involves Loved Ones
Northbound's Family Program brings parents and partners into treatment for four structured days each month, without extra fees. Here’s what families actually experience.
Roughly half of people with a substance use disorder also have a co-occurring mood or anxiety disorder.
People with substance use disorders are about twice as likely to also live with a mood or anxiety disorder. Trauma is often the thread connecting both. At Northbound Treatment, this pattern shapes every detail of residential and PHP care at our Orange County locations.
If trauma is part of your story, the difference between programs is not whether trauma gets mentioned—it's whether the entire approach is built around it. That difference changes outcomes.
Trauma-informed care is not a single technique. It's a framework that shapes staff interactions, the physical environment, and every clinical decision. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) outlines six core principles: safety, trustworthiness, peer support, collaboration, empowerment, and cultural sensitivity. Programs that truly follow these principles feel different at every level. Northbound Treatment applies these principles at its licensed Orange County facilities, where staff receive ongoing training in trauma-informed approaches. Northbound Treatment operates under California DHCS License #300661CP.
In practice, trauma-informed care means staff ask what happened to you—not what's wrong with you. If you shut down in group, a trauma-aware clinician adapts, rather than pushes. Treatment plans account for the nervous system dysregulation that often drives substance use, not just the substance itself.
Trauma responses—hypervigilance, emotional numbing, mistrust—do not vanish at the door. Ignoring them can trigger them. That's why the environment matters as much as the therapy itself.
Treating substance use without addressing trauma is postponement, not recovery. Northbound's clinical model is built on that fact. Leaving trauma untouched means the emotional pain fueling substance use remains. Cravings often come from the brain’s link between substance and relief, not just physical dependence.
The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) documents that co-occurring disorders share neural pathways—stress, fear, and reward circuits overlap. If trauma is left unaddressed, the main driver of substance use persists.
This is why dual diagnosis care is not a specialty add-on at Northbound. It is the foundation of every plan from the start.

At The Grove in Garden Grove, trauma screening and support begin on day one. Every client receives a full biopsychosocial assessment and psychiatric evaluation, which screen for anxiety, depression, and PTSD alongside substance use. You do not need to raise trauma concerns yourself, the team is trained to look for them. Northbound Treatment operates under California DHCS License #300661CP, which means the program is subject to state oversight and must meet established clinical standards.
Each client is paired with a treatment team that can include up to six clinicians. This team may consist of an ASAM-certified addiction psychiatrist, a licensed primary therapist, a trauma therapist, and an addictions counselor. The trauma therapist is not an extra. You meet with them as part of your core care.
The environment is designed with intention. The Grove does not feel like a hospital. Residential rooms, a nightly fire pit, chef-prepared meals, a walking labyrinth, and outdoor yoga spaces all serve a purpose: lowering the sense of threat that keeps a traumatized nervous system on edge. Here, safety is built into the architecture.
Routine is deliberate. Idle time raises relapse risk and, for people with trauma, can mean more intrusive thoughts. Morning check-ins, individual therapy, group counseling, psychoeducation, and evening community meetings create predictability, a key ingredient for nervous system regulation.
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is one of the most studied trauma therapies. The American Psychological Association recommends it for PTSD. Northbound’s clinicians use EMDR to help clients reprocess traumatic memories, reducing their emotional charge without forcing detailed retelling. For people who have avoided trauma work because talking felt impossible, this approach can open a door.
DBT (Dialectical Behavior Therapy) is woven throughout residential and PHP care. It teaches emotional regulation and distress tolerance, skills many trauma survivors never had a chance to learn. These are practiced daily in both group and individual sessions.
CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) targets the thought patterns, shame, catastrophizing, hypervigilance, that trauma and addiction reinforce. CBT offers a structured way to identify and change those patterns.
Somatic yoga and breathwork are also part of treatment. Trauma is stored in the body as well as the mind. The van der Kolk research tradition on somatic approaches to PTSD has influenced Northbound’s use of movement and body-based regulation. These practices activate the parasympathetic nervous system, which calms the fight-or-flight response.
Art therapy and music therapy give clients non-verbal ways to process trauma. For those whose trauma is pre-verbal, or who find words inadequate, these therapies offer another path.
After residential care, Northbound’s Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) in Newport Beach continues trauma-focused treatment with a step-down intensity. PHP runs up to six hours a day, five or six days a week at our Newport Beach location. The facility is licensed by the State Department of Health Care Services (DHCS). Clients start applying recovery skills to real life while still receiving daily clinical support.
Whenever possible, the same primary therapist from residential continues into PHP. That continuity is especially important for trauma survivors. Building trust takes time, and starting over with a new clinician at each level disrupts progress.
The InVivo® model shapes PHP structure. Rather than keeping clients isolated, the program reintroduces real-world activities with therapeutic guidance. Surf sessions, grocery outings, and community activities are not just recreation, they are structured exposures to daily life, with staff support for processing challenges as they arise.
Trauma rarely affects only one person. Family systems often carry trauma across generations. Patterns like enabling, hypervigilance, or emotional shutdown can mirror trauma responses in loved ones.
Northbound’s Family Program runs four days each month and is included at no extra cost. The curriculum covers disease-model education, co-dependency, family roles, healthy communication, and a guided face-to-face session called Knee to Knee, often described as the most powerful part of the program. Family members can also join weekly Wednesday evening support meetings via Zoom after discharge.
Addiction affects the whole family. Recovery must include the family, or the environment a person returns to will not change.
Opioid-involved deaths in Orange County rose 45% from 2019 to 2020. Treatment options exist, but few programs make trauma-informed care a structural priority. At Northbound, the medical director is double board-certified in psychiatry and addiction medicine, trauma therapists are core team members, and the continuum of care, from detox to aftercare, remains under one clinical roof.
Northbound has served Southern California since 1988. A 2015 independent outcomes study with USC researchers found that over 97% of clients who completed treatment remained abstinent from illicit drugs, and 97% saw reductions in depression and anxiety symptoms. Treating substance use and mental health together changes results.

Roughly a third of Northbound’s staff are alumni of the program. This shapes daily interactions. When a counselor says they understand, they usually mean it from experience.
No. Trauma-informed care is provided to every client, regardless of diagnosis. The clinical team screens for trauma history during admission, and the principles of safety, trust, and collaboration guide all interactions, not just those with a formal PTSD diagnosis.
Yes. EMDR is part of Northbound’s trauma therapy options in both residential and PHP care. Your trauma therapist will determine if and when EMDR is appropriate, usually after the initial detox and stabilization period.
The connection often becomes clearer during assessment and early therapy. You do not need to have the answers when you arrive. The clinical team’s job includes helping you understand how your history relates to substance use. That’s part of the assessment and evaluation process.
Yes. The Family Program includes sessions on family dynamics, co-dependency, and communication shaped by trauma. Family members attend four days each month at no extra cost and have access to ongoing support meetings after discharge.
Most major insurance plans cover medically necessary residential and PHP care, including dual diagnosis treatment. Northbound is in-network with Aetna, Cigna, BlueCross BlueShield, Anthem, TriCare, and more. Benefits are typically verified within about one business hour of your call.
A standard program may offer trauma therapy as an add-on. A trauma-informed program builds safety, trust, and trauma awareness into every layer, staff training, environment, clinical protocols, and real-time responses to distress. The difference is most obvious in how staff respond when someone is struggling, not just in what’s listed on a brochure.
