Most residential programs keep people insulated from daily life. For detox and the first days of stabilization, that’s necessary. But Northbound Treatment built its residential model around a different premise: if someone never practices living sober while they still have clinical support, what are they actually preparing for?
That question led to InVivo®. The name comes from the Latin for “in life.” At Northbound, it’s not just a slogan. The InVivo® treatment model means clients practice real-world skills and responsibilities inside a structured, supportive setting—before they leave it.
What InVivo® Actually Means in Practice
InVivo® isn’t a single group or a special weekend. It shapes every aspect of how residential treatment at The Grove is structured, from intake to discharge.
Early on, the priority is stabilization. Clients are medically monitored, assessed, and protected from outside stressors. But as stability returns, the InVivo® model starts to reintroduce the elements that define daily life: phone access, social interaction, independent choices, grocery runs, and community activities. Each step is intentional, not rushed or random.
At Northbound’s Newport Beach PHP campus, InVivo® might mean surf sessions, trips to Sequoia National Park, or outings where clients handle real-world logistics. At The Grove in Garden Grove, it shows up in nightly fire-pit gatherings, alumni barbecues, and community events that mirror everyday routines. The clinical team is clear. This is training for life, not just a break from it. The Grove is licensed by the State Department of Health Care Services (license 300661CP) and serves clients from across Orange County.
“Real life, practiced safely.”
Why Isolation Alone Doesn't Build Recovery Skills
A person can spend 90 days shielded from every trigger and responsibility, then walk out unprepared for a regular Tuesday when a craving hits and no one is looking. That’s the gap InVivo® is built to close.
The National Institute on Drug Abuse points to skill-building and behavioral rehearsal as essential to effective addiction treatment. Skills don’t automatically transfer from a therapy room to real life. They need to be practiced in situations that resemble real life, with support close by if someone stumbles—but not so close that the person never learns to walk on their own.
This is why Northbound doesn’t treat phones and social contact as threats to be eliminated. Managed reintroduction, with clinical guidance, is part of the process. Someone who hasn’t touched their phone for two months and then steps into a world of notifications and social media isn’t prepared—they’re just delayed.
How InVivo® Fits Inside Residential Treatment at The Grove
Residential treatment at The Grove lasts 30 to 90 days. Clients live on campus with 24/7 clinical support, gender-specific wings, and co-ed group programming. Each person works with a treatment team that can include an ASAM-certified addiction psychiatrist, a licensed primary therapist, a trauma specialist, and an addictions counselor.
The daily schedule is structured to keep idle time to a minimum, since boredom is a known risk for recurrence. Mornings start with check-ins, followed by individual therapy, group counseling, psychoeducation, trauma-focused work, DBT, EMDR, yoga, and evening community meetings. InVivo® runs alongside these therapies, giving clients a chance to apply what they’re learning in real situations that same day.
The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration defines recovery as a process of change where people improve health and wellness, live self-directed lives, and reach their potential. InVivo® puts that definition into action.
Families sometimes worry that bringing real-world elements back too soon could destabilize someone in early recovery. That concern is valid. InVivo® is sequenced by clinicians, not by a calendar. No one gets a phone on day three. The pace is set by clinical progress, and families are kept in the loop throughout.
What InVivo® Means for Families
When a person leaves residential treatment at Northbound, they’ve practiced the skills they’ll need—not just talked about them. That’s the difference InVivo® brings.
It also means the transition out of residential care isn’t abrupt. Because real-world responsibilities are reintroduced gradually, stepping down to PHP or IOP feels like a natural next step, not a sudden plunge. The same treatment team manages that handoff. Clients don’t start over—they move forward.
Northbound’s Family Program runs four days each month at no extra cost at The Grove in Garden Grove, California. It covers the disease model, communication, co-dependency, and guided sessions with your family member. When families understand InVivo®, they’re better equipped to support recovery at home. The American Society of Addiction Medicine highlights family involvement as a meaningful factor in long-term outcomes.
After discharge, weekly Family Support meetings continue every Wednesday evening via Zoom. Recovery doesn’t end at discharge, and Northbound’s support for families doesn’t either.
Signature Programs That Run Alongside InVivo®
InVivo® is the foundation. Several specialized programs at The Grove build on it for unique needs.
Collegebound® and Careerbound® run exclusively during residential treatment at Garden Grove. Both serve young adults whose education or career was interrupted by substance use disorder. Instead of pausing those goals, these programs integrate academic and professional skill-building into treatment. Recovery supports the future, rather than putting it on hold.
For those whose spirituality is central, the LINKS faith-based track is available. The Spiritual Track, which is non-denominational, brings in sound therapy, breathwork, somatic yoga, and outdoor reflection. Both are woven into the InVivo® model, they’re not add-ons, but ways to practice a life that includes what matters most.
Wolf-assisted therapy stands out as well. Clients work with wolf ambassadors in supervised sessions. Wolves respond to emotional states in ways that can surface unconscious patterns and build non-verbal awareness. The approach is experiential and grounded in animal-assisted therapy research.
A 2015 independent outcomes study with USC researchers found that over 97% of Northbound clients who completed treatment were abstinent from illicit drugs. Practicing skills during treatment, not just after, is part of what drives those results.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is InVivo® a specific therapy, or something broader?
InVivo® is Northbound’s overall treatment model, not a single therapy. It’s the philosophy of gradually reintroducing real-world responsibilities and experiences during care, with clinical support throughout. Individual therapies like CBT, DBT, and EMDR all operate within this framework.
How does Northbound decide when a client is ready for more independence?
The treatment team bases these decisions on clinical progress, not a set schedule. Each client’s plan is reviewed regularly by their team, and the pace of reintroduction matches where the person is in recovery.
Does InVivo® mean clients have unrestricted access to phones and the internet?
No. Access is phased in and clinically guided. Early in residential treatment, the focus is stabilization. Phone and social access return gradually as a person progresses, with guidance on managing those interactions in a recovery-supportive way.
Can families participate in the InVivo® process?
Yes. The Family Program at The Grove runs four days each month and helps family members understand the model, improve communication, and prepare for their role in supporting recovery at home. Weekly Zoom-based support continues after discharge.
What happens after residential treatment — does InVivo® continue?
The InVivo® approach continues through all levels of care. At the PHP level in Newport Beach, experiential activities and community outings remain part of treatment. At the IOP level, clients live off-campus and practice skills daily, with ongoing clinical support. Each step builds on the last.
