How to Choose a California Rehab Center: Family Checklist
You'll be able to check a program's license, ask the clinical questions that separate one center from another, and know what to expect when you call admissions.
Mornings, therapy blocks, meals, family programming, and evenings at Northbound's Garden Grove campus follow a clear residential rhythm.

A day in residential treatment in California usually opens with a check-in, nursing support, and breakfast before any clinical work starts. At Northbound's Garden Grove campus, known as The Grove, therapy blocks, educational groups, meals, wellness activities, and an evening community meeting fill the hours that follow. You live on-site with 24/7 support, and your treatment plan sets the order and intensity of each day.
Exact clock times shift with clinical need, the day of the week, and your phase of care. So it helps to know what happens in each part of the day and why those activities are on the schedule.
Expect four broad blocks, with meals and short breaks between them. Mornings are for routine, afternoons for therapy or experiential work, and evenings for community time. The daytime clinical block sits in the middle of the day.
| Part of the day | What you may do |
|---|---|
| Morning | Complete a morning check-in, receive daily nursing attention and prescribed medication support, eat breakfast, and attend a scheduled practice such as guided meditation. |
| Daytime clinical block | Attend individual therapy, group counseling, psychoeducation, trauma-focused sessions, or a psychiatric appointment based on your treatment plan. |
| Afternoon | Continue clinical work or join experiential programming. Residential options include DBT skills, EMDR when clinically indicated, art, music, and yoga. |
| Evening | Eat dinner, attend a community meeting, connect with peers, and have scheduled downtime. Some evenings include alumni meetings or fire-pit gatherings. |
Think of this as a sequence rather than a fixed timetable. One day may put individual therapy before lunch, and another may center on a trauma session, family work, or psychiatric care.
Northbound builds daily structure to create routine and cut long stretches without a plan. Early recovery can bring cravings, shifting emotions, disrupted sleep, and trouble concentrating. A known sequence gives you clear expectations while clinicians watch how you respond.
Structure also gives your treatment team repeated chances to assess progress. A residential client may work with a personal team of up to six clinicians, including an addiction psychiatrist, licensed primary therapist, trauma therapist, addictions counselor, and case management support.
Level-of-care decisions follow clinical need. The ASAM Criteria help clinicians assess placement, continued care, and transitions between treatment settings. Your schedule may change when symptoms, safety needs, or progress point to a different amount of care.
Clinical care runs through the day at The Grove, but no one attends every therapy type every day. Residential programming includes individual sessions, group counseling, psychoeducation, trauma-focused care, and evening community meetings, and a typical client sees a mix of these in a given day.
Individual therapy gives you private time to examine substance use, mental health symptoms, relationships, and patterns that raise the risk of returning to use. Group counseling is where you practice honest communication and accountability with peers. Psychoeducation explains addiction, emotional regulation, and recurrence-prevention skills in plain terms.
Your plan may include cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, EMDR, motivational interviewing, or experiential therapy. Clinicians choose methods based on your assessment and how you respond, so you won't necessarily get every method.
Mental health care sits inside treatment because depression, anxiety, PTSD, bipolar disorder, and other conditions can occur alongside substance use disorders. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration recommends integrated care for co-occurring mental health and substance use conditions.
Medical care stays available throughout. Northbound's Medical Director, Dr. Venice Sanchez, is double board-certified in Psychiatry and Neurology and in Addiction Medicine. Clients also receive daily nursing attention and psychiatric care as needed.
The Grove serves three chef-curated meals each day. Between therapy blocks you have comfortable residential rooms, an on-site gym, a walking labyrinth, and a padded turf court used for yoga and volleyball.
Art, music, meditation, and movement give you ways to practice emotional regulation outside a therapy office. Evenings around the fire pit leave room for conversation. Scheduled alumni meetings let current clients hear from people who are applying recovery skills after treatment.
Northbound's InVivo® model gradually reintroduces real-life choices and responsibilities. As you progress, staff may guide the return of phone access, social interaction, independent activities, and practical outings like grocery runs. The pace depends on your treatment phase and clinical plan.
Family involvement follows a monthly format rather than a daily one. Families of residential clients can take part for four days each month through Northbound's Family Program, at no additional cost to them.
Sessions cover the disease model of addiction, communication, boundaries, codependency, and family roles. The program also includes family-only processing groups and guided communication exercises such as Knee to Knee.
Your primary clinician can share appropriate updates and coordinate family sessions during treatment. After discharge, family members can join a Wednesday evening support meeting on Zoom, which gives them a place to keep working on boundaries and communication.
The schedule shifts toward more independence as you show progress. Northbound begins discharge planning weeks before your final residential day, covering therapy referrals, step-down care, recovery meetings, family support, work or school resources, and alumni connections.
A common next level is the Partial Hospitalization Program in Newport Beach, which provides up to six hours of care a day, five or six days a week. Other options include Intensive Outpatient care, sober living, HomeBound virtual treatment, and aftercare. The clinical team recommends the level that fits your current needs.
Aftercare planning and alumni connection are included at no additional cost. Alumni programming includes weekly meetings, monthly activities, milestone celebrations, and continued contact after discharge.
A clinical assessment should determine your level of care. Residential treatment is often the stronger option when you need 24/7 structure, distance from access to substances, close observation, or daily care for a substance use disorder alongside mental health symptoms.
Medical detox may need to come first if stopping alcohol, opioids, benzodiazepines, or another substance could cause dangerous withdrawal. At The Grove, detox and residential care are under one roof, and detox typically lasts 5 to 10 days depending on substance history and medical assessment.
A less intensive setting may fit if you're medically stable and can stay free from substance use where you live. Northbound also offers Partial Hospitalization, Intensive Outpatient, sober living, online treatment, and aftercare.
The Grove is at 9842 13th St, Garden Grove, CA 92844. Northbound operates under State Department of Health Care Services License 300661CP and serves adults 18 and older.
No. The broad rhythm repeats, but therapy appointments, medical needs, family sessions, and experiential activities can change the timetable. Your treatment team explains each day's schedule and any clinically necessary changes.
Phone access is gradually reintroduced through the InVivo® model. Timing depends on your treatment phase, clinical plan, and readiness to handle outside contact without disrupting treatment.
Residential care typically lasts 30 to 90 days at Northbound. The final length depends on your assessment, progress, co-occurring conditions, and the level of care recommended under ASAM criteria.
Bring comfortable clothing, everyday toiletries, identification, insurance and prescription cards, approved downtime items, and your emergency contact list. Bring prescription medication in its original packaging so staff can store and distribute it. Admissions sends a full packing list before arrival.
The Grove has gender-specific residential wings and co-ed clinical programming. Clients may share groups, community activities, and specialty programming while living in separate residential areas.
Insurance may cover medically necessary residential care, but your plan controls benefits, authorization, deductibles, and other costs. Northbound accepts plans from Aetna, Anthem, BlueCross BlueShield, Cigna, ComPsych, TriCare, and other listed carriers. The admissions team can verify your benefits before admission.
Admissions is available 24/7. Call 866-311-0003 to talk through the residential schedule, your clinical needs, insurance verification, and next steps with Northbound's admissions team.
