What is: Intervention?

Home > What is: Intervention?

Intervention is defined as a coordinated effort by a group of people to help an addict realize that they need professional help in dealing with their addictions.  Interventions are often conducted by friends and family members of the addict, and typically involve a confrontational meeting.

Interventions highlight the important role that an addict’s family and friends play in helping addicts throughout the treatment process.  It is important for the client’s support system to understand that intervention is only the first step, and that there are many other important ways in which they will need to help their loved one deal with their addict.  Our treatment program includes educating friends in family members in dealing with addiction, and helping them to recognize the damage addiction can cause and how to deal with the challenges that lie ahead.

Interventions can be an effective way to encourage addicts to take the first step in seeking help for their addictions, but it is important that confrontations are carefully planned.  The guidance and support of intervention specialists can ensure that interventions are conducted safely, and with the best chance of success.  At NTS, we can help families and friends find interventionists – specialists in the field of addiction confrontations – that can help stage interventions safely and effectively.
