What is Suboxone?

Suboxone is a synthetic opiate that, much like methadone, is most often used to help those in recovery manage the symptoms of withdrawal. As such, it is vulnerable to some kinds of dependency and abuse that are associated with other opiates, prescribed or not, and continued use of the drug can result in a physical dependency, even when used under the direction of a doctor.

The Path to Addiction

Like all opiates, Suboxone addiction can result in a powerful physical craving for the drug, causing painful withdrawal symptoms and making it difficult for the addict to function without it. Because it is usually administered on an outpatient basis, addicts may “shop” for more prescriptions from multiple doctors. Those who become addicted to Suboxone may become secretive about their activities, avoid family and friends, and have difficulties in work or school. A fixation on the drug and preoccupation with obtaining more is also common among those with a dependency on Suboxone.

The most dangerous side effect of Suboxone addiction is death, which can follow an overdose or adverse reaction when combined with alcohol or other drugs. Opiates depress the central nervous system, slowing breathing and impairing brain and motor functions. This can lead to respiratory failure and such complications are an indication that the user should seek immediate medical assistance. In addition, Suboxone can also damage the liver and kidneys.

Seeking Treatment

Withdrawal from opiates, including Suboxone, can be difficult and should take place under experienced medical supervision. Many Suboxone addicts may be looking for an effective way to complete rehab without further reliance on drugs, and Northbound is prepared to help.
