Two men shake hands with a yellow background as they discuss the financial benefits of insurance for drug rehab programs.

If you or someone you know is experiencing alcohol or drug addiction, then it’s important to pursue treatment as soon as possible. We know that it can be confusing to figure out which treatment centers take your insurance, what services are covered, and how to use your insurance benefits. That’s why we have made it our goal to make our insurance process as simple as possible.

As you compare options for addiction treatment programs and search for the best treatment centers in Orange County, keep in mind that Northbound Treatment Center can help you verify your insurance and answer any questions you might have along the way.

What Does Insurance Cover?

Cost should never be a barrier to addiction treatment. Addiction is a disease, and as such, insurance companies must cover some form of substance abuse treatment as well as mental health treatment services.

Before you start researching treatment options and providers, it is important to understand any deductibles, copayments, coinsurance, and out-of-pocket limits stipulated by your insurance provider or plan. For example, if you have a high-deductible plan, you may be responsible for a certain amount of out-of-pocket costs and copays before your insurance provider pays for any services.

Having this information ahead of time will save you a lot of time and energy and help you make informed decisions as you research addiction programs and treatment options available to you in Orange County.

Depending on your health insurance plan, you may be eligible for the following at Northbound:

Insurance providers and plans often have limits on how often certain treatments can be utilized, the duration of treatment, and which treatment providers you can use. For example, you may be limited to a 90-day stay at a residential inpatient treatment facility, or you may only be allowed a certain number of mental health therapy visits per year. It’s important to understand these limitations so that you are not stuck with a huge bill at the end of your treatment or recovery program.

Generally, it is best to review your insurance policy and contact your insurance provider or plan administrator directly if you have any questions about what services are covered, where you can receive treatment, the duration of treatment, and your out-of-pocket costs.

Depending on your policy, you may also be able to work with both in-network and out-of-network providers, though in-network providers will likely be more affordable. Don’t hesitate to reach out to individual facilities and treatment centers as well to see if they can help answer any questions about your insurance benefits.

Medi-Cal for Substance Abuse Treatment

Medi-Cal is California’s Medicaid program, offering free or low-cost health insurance coverage to qualifying individuals. Through Medi-Cal, you or your loved one can access affordable addiction treatment and recovery programs. Before you are able to pursue treatment, you must have a documented diagnosis of a substance-related and addictive disorder. You must also meet the American Society of Addiction for medical necessity of services.

Orange County residents are eligible for various levels of care:

  • Withdrawal management
  • Residential treatment
  • Intensive outpatient treatment programs
  • Outpatient drug free services
  • Narcotic treatment program/opioid treatment program services
  • Recovery services
  • Medication-assisted treatment

In addition to these options, there are additional drug and alcohol addiction treatment services available to pregnant and parenting women and to younger individuals under the age of 21.

If you are using Medi-Cal, there may be restrictions on the providers you can use. To make the process easier, we recommend starting with the Orange County Drug Medi-Cal Organized Delivery Systems website, handbook, and list of accepted Orange County treatment centers and providers.

From there, you can figure out which treatment centers and options are available to you. If you have any questions throughout this process, be sure to contact individual treatment centers or facilities directly to make sure they are an approved provider.
